Doujinshi, Figures, Straps

Where to Buy Merchandise

We’re back! I’ve been insanely busy lately between working almost every day and spending my free time working on beta testing visual novels. I haven’t had much time to do… just about anything else. I’ve been working on and off on this, though, so hopefully this will help anyone who either wants to begin collecting or would like a large reference list of stores you can buy from.

Amiami
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures, DVDs, small goods, general merchandise

Amiami is my default shopping site. Their shipping can seem a bit pricey, depending on the size of the box and the option you choose, but that’s mostly just inevitable and due to overseas shipping in general. They always post new things, be it figures, calendars, apparel, or card sleeves. Amiami also has a used figure section (with grades, so you know what quality the item is in).

AkibaSoul
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures

AkibaSoul is a US-based company that sells and buys used figures, as well as allowing users to grab new preorders in much the same way Amiami does. I’ve only ordered from them once, but I had a really good experience. I’ve spoken directly to the owner, Martin, a few times, and he was always very friendly.

A huge perk is that they offer a flat $5.99 shipping fee per figure, which is insanely good if you tend to just get one or two per month. If you live in the US, using in-country shipping is extremely convenient.

SolarisJapan
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures, artbooks, video games, etc.

SolarisJapan sells both new and used figures, and sometimes has oddly rare pieces of merchandise. I was even able to buy an Umineko dakimakura off of it, somehow. I haven’t ordered from them since, but I had a rather good experience and I’d recommend them. Their stuff sometimes goes fast, so you need to be quick if you find something you want.

HobbySearch
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: No
Specializes in: Figures, gunpla, mechanical models.

Hobby Search was the first website I’d ever bought an anime figure off of (at the age of 15… with my parents’ debit card…). It’s been around for a long time, and it’s reliable. I don’t remember very much about my experience with it, but it was all positive.

Hobby Link Japan
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: No
Specializes in: Figures, Gunpla, general toys

Similarly, HLJ has seemingly always been around. HLJ can be good for unusual merchandise, although they do stock figures, too.

Plamoya
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: No
Specializes in: DVDs, video games, figures

I rarely order from Plamoya because they jack up their prices pretty horrendously, but they’re otherwise a reputable, reliable company.

Myfigurecollection ads
Ships internationally: Depends on the seller
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures, straps, general merchandise

I’ve used the ads section of myfigurecollection a few times now, and I’ve always had a good experience. All of the figures are sold by personal collectors, as businesses aren’t allowed to list here. Users who sell bootlegs or are deceitful can be banned from the site for it. I really like purchasing from other collectors, as there’s a much lower risk of being scammed, and it gives the feeling of contributing to and participating in a community.

The /r/animefigures subreddit
Ships internationally: Depends on the seller
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures

Similarly, the subreddit for anime figures often has figure sales. I’ve bought all of one figure from this subreddit, but I had a good experience with it. The people here are extremely friendly, and it’s nice, again, to see a community that’s as passionate about your hobbies as you are.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.21.52)

The /r/dakimakuras subreddit
Ships internationally: Depends on the seller
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Dakimakuras

I haven’t personally bought from this subreddit, but I do browse it every now and then. Non-bootlegged dakimakuras are pretty hard to find in the aftermarket, especially when you’re limited to online sales that ship to the US (or otherwise, outside of Japan). This has an active English-speaking community, as well, so it’s nice to see.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.23.50)

eBay
Ships internationally: Depends on the seller
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Anything. Everything.

I’ll be doing a separate blog post on eBay, as well. eBay has its definite pros and cons, but it’s still somewhere I browse pretty frequently for anime merch and have purchased from in the past. As long as you know what you’re looking for, it’s pretty easy to get quality items, but there’s also a lot of price scalping, so be sure to look around and check your options before going in on anything you find there.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.26.29)

Mandarake
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Doujinshi, figures, misc. merchandise

Mandarake sells all sorts of used goods. They do have a functional English site, and they will do international shipping without a proxy. If you’re looking to get anything 18+, you’ll need a credit card (Yes, not a debit card.) to make the purchase, seeing as paypal doesn’t allow the transaction of 18+ materials. We often use mandarake for doujins, but not so much for figures since shipping can be a bit pricey.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.31.52)

Crunchyroll
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: No
Specializes in: Figures, plushes, apparel, DVDs+Blurays, misc. merchandise

I haven’t really shopped from Crunchyroll, personally. Obviously, their merchandise is all legitimate, and they frequently cut prices with their deals of the day and coupon codes. The only time I’ve purchased from them is when they sold the limited Aniplex Godoka and Homucifer figures.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.33.43)

TokyoOtakuMode
Ships internationally: Yes
Sells used merchandise: No
Specializes in: Figures, magazines, misc. merchandise

I know a lot of people are fans of TokyoOtakuMode, but I personally don’t like them and won’t use them. I did have a bad experience with them last year, and I felt pretty taken advantage of by the customer service rep. Their shipping prices are unnecessarily high, and their credit system won’t benefit you unless you’re constantly buying things from them. This is just my personal experience and opinion, but there are lots of other places you can buy from.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.38.15)

Suruga-ya
Ships internationally: No
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Figures, doujinshi, misc. merch (both official and doujin)

Suruga-ya is a Japanese site that sells used goods that are often difficult to find. You’d need a proxy to purchase from them, but I’ve had a good experience with them and like browsing them a lot. Their stock moves surprisingly quickly, and sales are sudden, so it’s best not to hesitate when purchasing from them.

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.40.41)

Yahoo! Japan Auctions
Ships internationally: No
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Everything. Similar to eBay.

YJA is a Japanese auction site that I’ve been able to find surprisingly rare merch on. I lurk around on it pretty frequently. A small amount of the things on here aren’t legitimate, but with a careful eye, you should be able to tell the difference (See: figures with Yui from K-ON’s head on Super Sonico’s body lmfao).

ss+(2017-11-11+at+08.42.09)

Mercari
Ships internationally: No
Sells used merchandise: Yes
Specializes in: Straps, figures, misc. merch

I found Mercari recently and was very pleasantly surprised. You can find a lot of hard-to-find stuff here with little to no effort, namely straps and official buttons and the like. It’s definitely worth exploring if you haven’t already, and it’s almost reminiscent of storenvy since everything is sold and listed by individuals.

I’m thinking about writing a post about using a proxy service? That might be good, too. If anyone has any topic requests, please let me know!
